There is a lot of history on Slowpitch Fielding gloves. But there are some great facts on how they are made differently from the 18th century to now. Slowpitch Softball gloves are way different then baseball gloves as in the webbing of the gloves are smaller for baseball because the ball is smaller, for softball the web is bigger depending on what size softball you have. The first glove ever made was to protect the hand when catching a ball. It was designed to prevent cracking and splitting to the hand during a game. From the past a softball glove had gone through many changes and are still being changed, its been changing for over the past 120 years.
However, during late 1920's the structure was just starting to be put together. The padding for the protection of the hand was structured into the glove before anything . Early 1930's the laced fingers were added to help keep a grip while field a ball or catching a pop fly, or just so the glove won't fly off your hand. The "Basket" also known as the webbing towards the finger-tips was also added to the glove's structure. In the 1950's the holes were added to put your fingers in to hold the glove in a position to catch the ball the right way.the webbing was added and webbed inside, one hole for the thumb, the pinkey shares a hole with your ring finger, and then your middle finger and index finger have their one little slot. The olden days gloves were tiny compared to nowadays. Now in 2021 we have the biggest and best Fielding gloves ever made.
